Congratulations on completing all three CERIC Method Foundations courses! This capstone verifies your mastery of the CERIC framework and, upon successful completion, awards the CERIC Method Foundations Certificate.

Who It’s For

  • Undergraduate and graduate students in higher education
  • TAs and instructors of science courses

Requirements

  • Interest or need to read research articles (aka scientific literature)
  • Internet access and connected device

Recommended Preparation

  • CERIC Method Foundations Course 1 (CM-F1)
  • CERIC Method Foundations Course 2 (CM-F2)
  • CERIC Method Foundations Course 3 (CM-F3)

This is the fourth and final course in the program.

Description

Building on the skills developed in Foundations 1, 2, and 3, this capstone is where you demonstrate mastery of the CERIC Method. It asks you to apply everything from the first three courses in integrated, cross-disciplinary ways, and adds one new topic: how to use generative AI without surrendering the critical reading the method builds. The CERIC Method Foundations Certificate is issued upon successful completion of the course.

The capstone is organized into four Key Concept sections, each followed by a Lesson Check quiz (80% to pass), and closes with a 15-question Capstone Assessment:

  • Mastering CERIC Elements — recognize Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, Implications, and Context across disciplines; resolve the common confusions (claims vs. findings, reasoning vs. rationale, implications vs. context); build complete CERIC reviews with a self-assessment checklist.
  • Critical Evaluation and Peer Review — evaluate research quality with the CERIC Quality Framework, spot fatal flaws and red flags, detect pseudoscience and logical fallacies, and give constructive feedback using the CERIC Peer Review Protocol.
  • Synthesis, Comparison, and Communication — compare multiple articles with CERIC comparison tables, track methodological evolution, write narrative summaries in the CCERI order, and present research with balanced critique.
  • Using CERIC with Generative AI — a CERIC-first, genAI-second workflow, a head-to-head comparison of an AI article digest with a human CERIC review, the error patterns to check for, and the ethics of disclosure, verification, and citation.

An optional, self-assessed Capstone Portfolio (a full CERIC Review, a two-article comparison, and a CCERI narrative summary of articles from your own field) lets you put the whole method to work before you finish. Estimated time: 5–7 hours.

Why The CERIC Method:

  • Provides learners with a way to read research articles effectively and efficiently.
  • Improves reading confidence and ease while reducing reading anxiety.
  • Evidence-based method for improving critical reading comprehension.
  • Supports reading for writing.

Our courses are self-paced and asynchronous, meaning you set the pace and can tailor your educational journey to your unique schedule and learning speed. This flexible format also supports diverse learning preferences, enabling students to delve deeply into complex topics at their own pace and breeze through areas of prior knowledge.

People Who Receive CERIC Method Preparation Have:

  • Improved focus on the article’s central argument.
  • Less worry about missing the article’s main points.
  • An effective way to gauge if an article is worth their reading time and effort.

Each Foundations course in the core skills series builds on the previous one, guiding you from basic concepts to application and helping you master the CERIC Method. Completing the Foundations series awards students a certificate recognizing their proficiency in critical thinking and analysis and equipping them with skills applicable across various academic and professional settings.
